Can Kindergarten be so soon?

Can't believe I just bought Samuel a lunchbox today.  Steve thinks we need to buy a backpack that is big enough to fit a folder in.  What other school supplies do we need that I have no idea about?  I've been waiting for this time for the last four and a half years, now that it's here, it feels like it came too soon.  Could I be a bigger cliche?

Kindergarten starts in four weeks.

Caitlyn needed a backpack large enough to carry a folder (Peechee size) for kindergarten. It wasn't so much for homework as it was for all the assorted paperwork and messages school sent home. She also carried a lunch in her backpack most days.

As for other school supplies, I still remember how shocked I was to figure out that "school supplies" (around here at least) doesn't mean "things your child should have in order to be successful at school" but "things we need in the classroom and can't afford any more". The kindergarten supply list at Caitlyn's school includes such things a Ziplocs, boxes of tissue, Post-its, glue, and daily snacks.

Hi Christina! Just saw this comment. Yeah, I was shocked to learn about what "school supplies" means now, but even more shocked to learn that our school just says, 'hand us $40, and we'll buy what we want'. Really? If everyone pays that, our teacher ends up with $1000 to do with what he will. Crazy. Of course, everyone doesn't pay $40, some of us subsidize those who can't or won't, but I don't really like the blank check aspect of it.
